Community organizations would come together to rally their members into aiding the war effort. At Barbara Finneson’s school in Los Angeles, they rallied around collecting newspapers for scrap. Enough scrap paper was worth huge financial dividends upon the completion of these drives.

Collecting Newspapers for Nearby Troops
Our little school was surrounded by bean fields. I don’t know if it was because we were so close to Douglas… but we did have a troop of soldiers in that bean field that practiced their maneuvers. We were very proud of that and we were very aware of it. We saved newspapers. I don’t know how long it took us, but I remember the newspaper drives that we had there. And we raised enough money to buy that troop a Jeep – the whole school. And they were so thrilled that we did that that they gave every single kid in that school a ride on that Jeep.
