The National Home Front Project, an innovative oral history initiative at Washington College’s Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience, has been collecting memories of World War II civilians since 2013. Our team of undergraduate students has recorded nearly 250 interviews with “the greatest generation” of local residents to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and across the Mid-Atlantic, with a selection of those oral histories being included on this project website. In addition to audio recordings, we have collected digital images of wartime letters, photographs, and other artifacts that help tell our interviewees’ stories.
